Utilizing Larry DiMarzio's 1959 Cherry Sunburst Les Paul® for reference, DiMarzio used the same materials as 1959, gifted ears, and decades of winding experience to create the new PAF® 59 pickups. There are two major differences between a great vintage Strat® pickup and an average one: treble response and dynamics. A great pickup is clear and bright, but not thin-sounding. A great one makes the sound jump out of the amp when you pick hard and drop way down when you play softly, and the tone varies when the string is picked at different spots. The best pickup we’ve ever heard like this was from 1958, and that’s what inspired the Area 58™, with two major differences. Our pickup has way less magnet pull, and virtually no hum. -
DiMarzio® has been working on serious vintage single-coil design with no hum for twelve years. Our goal has always been to capture the best qualities of pickups we heard from the 1950s and early 60s. We’ve played several pickups from the early 60s that had a unique tonality: they were steely, yet woody-sounding. The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was a watershed event in American music. When it was over, the world had heard and felt the sound of a Strat® in the hands of a master. Single-coils in 1967 were bright and very clean. And, of course, they hummed. We've captured the classic bright and clean sound but totally eliminated the hum with our patented Area™ technology. What do you need in order to play blues with a Strat®? The Virtual Vintage® Blues has more power and warmth than a typical single-coil. You can really hear these qualities when you’re playing the Virtual Vintage® Blues. It withstands hard picking and opens up when you’re playing with an overdriven amp. Instead of shrinking away, the sound jumps out of the speakers. These qualities are really useful for getting a fat neck position sound, but they’re outstanding for the bridge position — particularly if you have a thin-sounding guitar or use light gauge strings. It’s a tough sounding bridge pickup with warmer guitars, and makes a good neck and middle choice to match with a full-size bridge humbucker. As the rest of the Virtual Vintage® family, it’s dead quiet; there’s practically no hum at all.

If you’ve heard the cliché that Alnico 2 means warm, soft sound, prepare to be surprised. This is not a polite pickup, and the closer it’s adjusted to the strings, the more raw it gets. In particular, the Alnico 2 magnetic field opens up all of the attack and definition of the low strings. It’s a hot pickup with a strong attack in the bridge position, and its Alnico 2 magnets allow it to work very well in the neck position as well, for players who want a very warm, round sound. If you want an in-your-face-and-proud-of-it sound, the Virtual Vintage® Heavy Blues 2 is the top pick.

The Fast Track T™ is hotter than most single-coil Tele® bridge pickups, but it has way more twang and snap than a humbucking pickup ought to have. We pulled this trick off by combining patented dual-resonance coils (less DC resistance than a standard Tele® single-coil) with twin-blade poles for less string-pull than standard rod magnets. Now the Thinline guitars were the first humbucker guitars Fender did in the 70's, and the Wide Humbucker used for these guitars is legendary. So we added another Gibson feature to this specific model - the Les Paul Gold colour - to make this a real mash up between two guitar giants. So you have the feel, the scale length and the neck profile of an old Fender guitar, mixed with a great colour and two Lollar Wide humbuckers. The T Custom guitar from the 70's, is still a popular design with the combination of a Wide Humbucker in neck position, and the twangy T pickup in bridge position. And the Mocha Brown colour, combined with a Maple neck, was very popular in those days, so we had Bill Nash and his guys, recreate that finish. Bill Nash and his crew are building a lot of great guitars, and have specialized in aged versions of classic designs. The JM is a classic Offset body design, and we tried to mix and match a little. So this model comes in Olympic White with a Mint Green pickguard, pretty much like many old 60's Strats, only this colour combination is not often seen on a JM guitar. We want you to play these instruments for years, so we go light on the Relic job, leaving the rest up to you. Most Nash guitars come with Lollars when we order.
